Do you buy consumer electronics online?

  • 5 Stars.

Every year, millions of consumer electronics are being sold online in America alone. From MP3 players to laptop computers and mobile phones. But would you buy something as personal as a laptop online?

Independent research of 780 Americans conducted by consumer group “Right Choice” revealed that an astounding 78% of those surveyed would purchase personal electronic items such as laptops and mobile phones online, while the remainder would feel more comfortable buying such goods from a physical store. Out of the remaining 28% surveyed, 82% percent do not trust online stores and the other 12% simply need to be physically holding and inspecting what they are purchasing.
This offcourse is great news for online business owners distributing goods online. And no wonder there are more and more online resellers of electronic goods popping up each month.
When purchasing such items online, there are a few factors to consider.
Company Logistics
Is the online seller equipped to respond to warranty claims in a prompt manner? Buying a computer from the Dell or HP websites, you can rest assured that you have a point of contact with a global network of technicians, freight forwarders an 24 hour support to handle any warranty claims.

Is the online seller an authorised distributor for those goods?
Many people have in the past been caught up paying large amounts of money to an online business for their products, only to find that when it comes to lodge in a warranty claim with the manufacturer, their claim is rejected due to the seller not being an authorised reseller of the particular brand. Online sellers can sometimes obtain goods through discount bulk deals which are not authorised by manufacturers, resulting in your warranty being void.
Read the sellers return policy.
This is really important. Due to the nature of electronic goods, sometimes they simply do not function as they are meant to or at all for that matter. Carefully examine the websites DOA (Dead On Arrival) policy. If the seller does not provide a hassle free, no questions asked return policy on damaged or faulty goods upon arrival, simply go elsewhere. Larger online sellers will have policies in place that protect consumers against faulty items on arrival.
Internet is a goldmine for bargains and great deals, with sellers being able to save on expensive building rents and other outgoings, those savings are passed onto the consumers.

Great news for online sellers, however I must add that while small electronics are ok to purchase online, if you are after anything larger like let's say a TV, I would actually recommend buying it from a physical store. If you ever need to send back the item for repairs or exchange, you can pay through the roof for postage, so save yourself a hassle and buy larger items from your local store.
