Top Tips For a Terrific Treadmill Workout

Because we recognise that some days it's easier to get moving and keep motivated than others, we've prepared these helpful Top Treadmill Tips. Whatever the weather, any time is a great time to get moving on your home treadmill and take steps towards realising your New Year's fitness goals!

Innovate with an incline.
A treadmill workout can be kept fun and dynamic by simply keeping it varied. In addition to running with a zero incline, mix it up a bit! Did you know that walking or running with even a slight incline gives you a challenge and makes your workout more effective? Why not try adding a 1.0 or 1.5 incline to your run or walk? It might not feel quite like a hill, but you can up the ante when you become more experienced. When you have the convenience of a treadmill in your home, you can always find new fitness challenges to work towards.
Become a hills hero.
Increasing the incline on your treadmill helps shift some of the workout's workload from your quadriceps muscles (on the front of your thighs) to the hamstrings at the back of your thighs. Why not increase the incline at five minutes intervals to see how high you can go without decreasing the speed?
Establish a routine.
Make a regular time for your treadmill workout (e.g. daily, every two days, three times a week etc). If it helps you put a fitness routine in place, set up your treadmill in a comfortable living space and work out while watching your favourite TV program. You'd be amazed at how exercise time flies when you're engrossed in your favourite show! As you become more disciplined and your routine becomes firmly established, you may wish to relocate your treadmill away from the TV, in a separate room.
Satisfy your need for speed.
Don't ignore your treadmill's monitor. Instead, make it work for you! Another great benefit of having a treadmill workout is the ability to adjust your speed, experiencing everything from a leisurely stroll to a fast-paced run at full tilt! So try picking up the pace a little. For instance, if your normal running or jogging pace is 6.0, try intervals of 7.0 and 8.0 for a couple of minutes at a time. You can always increase the pace as your confidence and fitness levels soar.
Safety First.
Always make sure your treadmill is away from children’s access. Step on the side rails when getting on or off the machine, do not simply stand on the belt after pressing the stop button.
